  • OUR WORK
  • REDUCE POVERTY IN ROMANIA

NUMBERS
  • 23% of Romanians live in poverty
  • Nearly 4,6 millions of Romanians don’t have what to eat
  • 3 out of 10 Romanian children are starving in this very moment
FACTS

Despite all of the economic and social progress Romania has made since the fall of Communism in 1989, the country still has a serious problem with hunger.

Romania has the unfortunate distinction of being the European Union country with the highest rate of child malnutrition — a shocking fact given that Romania has more than enough food. The reason, unfortunately, is that many Romanians cannot afford to buy the food that is available in the country’s supermarkets and shops.

The food sector reflects the uncontrolled economic and gender inequality.

51% of Romanian children cannot grow and develop properly because of hunger and more than one in five Romanian children are malnourished — they don’t have enough nutrients in their diet. The situation is especially bad for children living in rural areas, where only 21 percent of households have a computer, as opposed to 41 percent in urban areas. So, more than a half of children living in rural sector are going to bed hungry and are affected by social exclusion.

Unfortunately, these numbers don’t tell the whole story. The reality is even worse. Children are the most vulnerable members of society, and so they are the first to suffer when there are shortages of basic necessities. Children are the most at risk of contracting diseases like pneumonia and haemophilus influenza. They are the most susceptible to mental and physical stunting caused by a lack of proper nutrition.

Children of Romania are the poorest among all the other European Union countries.

What happens to the body and mind that is not fed properly?

When the body doesn’t get the amount of nutrients it needs to function properly, it goes into “starvation mode” to preserve itself, which means it starts hoarding nutrients and stops letting go of unnecessary or unhelpful hormones. It does this to ensure the body has enough resources to stay alive.

Studies have shown that children who are not given proper nutrition from infancy can have stunted growth, lower IQs, and other developmental problems. Poor diet has also been linked to a myriad of health issues, including obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and many others.

HOW WE TAKE ACTION

In a country where one in five children are malnourished, Lift For Better is working hard to stop child hunger.

We direct and coordinate campaign programs and projects that address poverty and low education levels, which are two of the main causes of child hunger.

Through our social programs, we provide food and supplies to families in need. We also work with local organizations to provide hot meals to children in public schools or other institutions. In addition, we run awareness campaigns to educate people on the importance of proper nutrition.

We believe that by helping the most vulnerable members of society, we can make a real difference in the fight against hunger.

With your support, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of souls in Romania.

STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN AND WOMEN

NUMBERS
  • 1 child is abused every day in Romania
  • Every day 1 child is rapped or sexually aggressed
  • Each 3 days a child falls victim to human trafficking
  • 65% of sexual abuse is happening in the family
  • Every year 9000 cases of abused children
  • In 2021, 1 out of 3 children suffer from anxiety, some cases leading to suicid
  • 90% of students declare that have been abused in school

  • 350.000 children are left alone by parents working abroad

  • 3 out of 10 women declare that have been physically or verbally abused starting age 15

FACTS

Lift For Better is committed to taking action to stop violence against children and women in Romania. The law 272/2004, adopted almost 20 years ago is supposed to protect children against abuse, negligence, exploitation, trafficking, rapping, illegal migration, kidnapping, internet pornography, or other form of violence in family, schools etc. The Istanbul Convention from 2011 is the first instrument in Europe to set legally binding standards specifically to prevent gender-based violence, protect victims of violence and punish perpetrators. However, the law is not always enforced and many children and women still suffer from abuse and violence.

Lift For Better works to raise awareness of the issue and to lobby for better enforcement of the law. We also work with other organizations to provide support to victims of abuse and violence. We believe that by helping those who have been affected by violence, we can make a difference and help to make Romania a safer and more just society for everyone.

HOW WE TAKE ACTION
  • We coordinate campaigns to raise awareness about the issue of abuse against women and children in Romania.

  • We work with local organizations to provide support and resources to those who are affected by abuse.

  • We advocate for stricter laws and regulations to protect women and children from abuse.

  • We provide training to professionals such as police officers, social workers, and teachers to help them better identify and respond to cases of abuse.

  • We work to create a safe and supportive environment for all women and children in Romania.

How To Recognize Abuse In Children
  • Abused children may exhibit signs of anxiety, depression, or social exclusion

  • Withdrawal from friends or activities that the child previously enjoyed

  • Sudden changes in behavior, such as becoming aggressive or withdrawn

  • Difficulty concentrating or paying attention in school

  • Fear of certain places or people

  • Nightmares or sleep problems

  • Eating disorders or sudden weight changes

  • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts

  • Bruises or other injuries that are not explained.

These children will have a dramatic future and when growing up they can also become aggressors. Traumas leave behind deep wounds.

We plan to search for more specialists and instruct personnel in schools and other education institutes, to guide, explain and recognize abuse in children. The awareness about child abuse must be spread widely among people, who can identify and help the child in need. Talking about children, we must always keep in mind that they are the most vulnerable section of our society and they deserve to be protected, nurtured and loved by all.

Schools must also be a safe place for children, where no bullying or discrimination takes place. If children are experiencing any difficulties at home, or feel like their parents are being abusive, school counselors must be the first port of call.

Our solution is to organize campaigns for parents on how to raise children properly, help raise awareness in schools, create digital protection programs and anti-bullying group actions.

400.000 children in Romania are dealing with bullying or cyberbullying.

INCREASE THE LEVEL OF EDUCATION IN ROMANIA

  • 42% of Romanian children are functionally illiterate

  • 32% of children don’t have access to online school

  • 43% of teachers don’t have access to enough products and equipment for online education

  • 1 out of 5 children abandon school

  • Only 24,5% of students get to high school in the rural sector

FACTS

The current educational system in Romania is in direct need of reform. The quality of education is very low, and the system is inefficient, discriminatory, and irrelevant. There are many problems that need to be addressed in order to improve the system.

  • The first problem is the quality of education. Romanian schools are not teaching students the skills they need to succeed in the real world. The curriculum is outdated and does not prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century. There is a lack of resources, and teachers are not properly trained. As a result, students are not learning the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in the modern world.

  • The second problem is the system itself. It is inefficient and discriminatory. The educational system in Romania is based on the Soviet model, which is no longer relevant or effective. It is also highly centralized, which makes it difficult for schools to adapt to the needs of their students. Additionally, the system is discriminatory against minority groups, such as Roma and disabled students.

  • The third problem is the lack of access to education. This is especially true for rural and poorer areas. There are not enough schools, and the ones that are there are often in poor condition. This means that many children do not have the opportunity to get an education. This is a major problem because it perpetuates the cycle of poverty and prevents people from being able to improve their lives.

Every child have the right to education

HOW WE TAKE ACTION

There are many steps that need to be taken in order to improve the educational system in Romania.

  • First, the quality of education needs to be improved by hiring better teachers, providing more resources for schools, and increasing accountability.

  • Second, the system needs to be made more efficient by streamlining the curriculum, reducing bureaucracy, and increasing access to resources.

  • Third, the system needs to be made more inclusive. This can be done by reducing discrimination, increasing access to education for marginalized groups, and making the system more relevant to the needs of today’s students.

  • Fourth, teacher training needs to be improved by providing more resources for teacher training, increasing the standards for teacher certification, and improving the quality of teacher education programs.

  • Fifth, school facilities need to be improved by providing more resources for school maintenance and repair, upgrading school buildings, and providing better resources for students.

These are just a few of the many steps that need to be taken in order to improve the education system in Romania. Lift For Better is determined to help make a change by spreading awareness of the issues facing the Romanian education system and how they can be fixed.

With enough support, Lift For Better can make a difference in the lives of thousands of children and make sure that they have the opportunity to get the education they deserve.

We need to fight together for a quality education because through education we create our ideal world and we need to treat educational matter as a national priority.
